Course Description

HANDS Family Support Worker Core Training provides a solid base training program for all staff engaging in direct service or supervision in home-based family support programs.

Due to the limit of participants per site/district, registration will be an approval based process. All registration requests will be approved or declined by HANDS Central Office.

Course Objectives

  1. Define the parent-child relationship, how to assess its quality, and how to use communication strategies to support its growth.
  2. Define the strength-based perspective of working with families and how it differs from the traditional service approach.
  3. Discuss why documentation is important and how to objectively document the work being done with families.
  4. Discuss the pitfalls of home visiting and why it is important to maintain professional boundaries.

Training is each day, Monday through Thursday, from 8:30 - 4:30 each day. There is one hour given for lunch break and two additional 15-minute breaks.

Instructor Bio
Misty is a Great Kids, Inc. Integrated Strategies for Home Visiting Trainer. She has sixteen years of experience in the field of Social Work. She has spent the last seven years with the HANDS Program where she continues to serve as a HANDS Parent Visitor and Family Support Worker Supervisor. She is a graduate of Western Kentucky University (1998), a Licensed Social Worker, and an Authorized Facilitator for Darkness to Light’s Stewards of Children. Her prior experience includes Community Education, Crisis Intervention, and Volunteer Coordination.

The Dashboard section of the TRAIN Home page is where your course management will take place.  The “My Learning” section contains recent, active course registrations.  To see all registrations, click the “Current Courses” button.

Next to each course listing is an “M” button. This will allow you to “Manage” your individual course registrations. To manage a particular course, simply click the “M” button to the right of the Course Name.  Mark your course as Completed: Click the “Completed” button to complete your course.

TO LAUNCH AN ASSESSMENT, YOU HAVE A VARIETY OF ACCESS POINTS: (Only when applicable) 

On the Course Details page, where you originally registered for the course, under the

Registration tab, there will be an assessment button.  If you click the “My Learning” link on the TRAIN Home page Dashboard, you will see which recent courses have assessments that need to be completed.

On the TRAIN Home page, if you have an assessment pending, a red alert notice will appear

within the “My Action Items” section of the TRAIN dashboard.
